David J. Lin

As Managing Director and Head of Investment Research at Altair Advisers, David is responsible for leading the research team’s manager due diligence efforts and guiding the firm’s investment strategy in conjunction with the Chief Investment Officer. He also serves on Altair’s Investment Committee, the firm’s central decision-making body.

Prior to joining Altair, David held various positions at William Blair, a global investment banking and asset management firm headquartered in Chicago. He began his career at William Blair in 2004 as a sell-side equity research analyst, providing coverage on companies in the commercial, business, and information services sectors. In 2008, David served as a senior research analyst in William Blair Select, the firm’s open architecture group, and was responsible for leading investment manager searches and monitoring current investment managers as part of Select’s due diligence process. In 2014, David became the Chief Investment Officer of the Grant Private Client Group within the private wealth management department of William Blair. He was responsible for manager due diligence, manager selection and monitoring, and portfolio asset allocation, servicing approximately 120 high-net-worth individuals and families with a total of near $1 billion in assets.

Prior to joining William Blair, David was a senior consultant in Deloitte’s Financial Advisory Services practice. He provided specialized consulting and appraisal services to determine the value of closely-held business enterprises, restricted securities in public corporation and intangible assets in connection with internal management forecasts, taxation planning, bankruptcies and mergers and acquisitions.

David is a CFA charterholder and a member of the CFA Society of Chicago. He graduated with honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor’s degree in finance.

David resides in Orinda, California, with his wife, Sarah, and their two young daughters.
