David J. Lin
As Director of Investment Research for Altair Advisers, David J. Lin is responsible for leading the research team’s ongoing due diligence efforts, which include identifying, evaluating, selecting, and monitoring investment managers across various asset classes and vehicle structures. The research team employs a disciplined and rigorous research process that combines both quantitative and qualitative analyses for evaluating managers in Altair’s client portfolios. He also serves on the firm’s Investment Committee, the central decision-making body, which approves recommended managers and determines tactical allocation changes.
Prior to joining Altair, David held various positions at William Blair, a global investment banking and asset management firm headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. He began his career at William Blair in 2004 as a sell-side equity research analyst, providing coverage on companies in the commercial, business, and information services sectors. In 2008, David served as a senior research analyst in William Blair Select, the firm’s open architecture group, and was responsible for leading investment manager searches and monitoring current investment managers as part of Select’s due diligence process. In 2014, David became the Chief Investment Officer of the Grant Private Client Group within the private wealth management department of William Blair. He was responsible for manager due diligence, manager selection and monitoring, and portfolio asset allocation, servicing approximately 120 high-net-worth individuals and families with a total near $1 billion in assets.
Prior to joining William Blair, David was a senior consultant in Deloitte’s Financial Advisory Services practice. He provided specialized consulting and appraisal services to determine the value of closely-held business enterprises, restricted securities in public corporations, and intangible assets in connection with internal management forecasts, taxation planning, bankruptcies, and mergers and acquisitions.
David is a CFA charterholder and is a member of the CFA Society of Chicago. He graduated with honors from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with a BA degree in Finance.
David resides in Wilmette with his wife, Sarah, and two young daughters.
